What should you know about ocular hypertension?

Eye pressure is measured during an eye examination. Pressure can be raised when fluid inside the eye is produced faster than it drains, although the reading can also vary with the test method and the structure of the cornea. Ocular hypertension may occur without symptoms, so a person may feel that vision is normal.

The concern is possible damage to the optic nerve, which carries visual information to the brain. An eye specialist may check the optic nerve, visual fields, drainage angle and retinal imaging, then combine those findings with personal risk factors. Some people need monitoring; others may be offered pressure-lowering drops.

Keep scheduled eye appointments and bring a list of medicines, including steroid treatments, because some medicines can affect eye pressure. Use prescribed drops as directed and mention stinging, blurred vision or difficulty using the bottle so technique or treatment can be reviewed.

Tell the eye team about previous eye injury, family history of glaucoma and any change in vision. Conditions such as hypertension, obesity or obstructive sleep apnoea may also be relevant to your overall health discussion, but they do not determine your eye diagnosis on their own.

Get urgent help for sudden severe eye pain, a red eye with blurred vision, halos around lights, nausea or sudden loss of vision. These symptoms can signal an eye emergency and should not wait for a routine pressure check. A gradual change in peripheral vision also warrants prompt assessment.

Ask what your pressure measurements mean, whether the optic nerve and visual field are healthy, how often you need monitoring, and what would prompt treatment. Ask for advice on drop technique and which symptoms require same-day care.
