What should you know about occasional cloudy urine?

Occasional cloudy urine is often temporary, but repeated episodes or urinary symptoms should be assessed by a clinician. The appearance can change when urine is concentrated, after certain foods or supplements, or when harmless crystals are present.

Cloudiness may come from concentrated urine during dehydration, minerals settling in the sample, mucus, or cells from inflammation. A urinary tract infection can present with cloudy urine alongside burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. A kidney infection can present with cloudy urine plus fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling markedly unwell. Cloudiness alone does not identify the cause.

Notice when the change occurs and whether it clears after normal fluid intake. Record associated symptoms, recent strenuous activity, new supplements, and any medicines. Do not use leftover antibiotics. Arrange a medical review if the change keeps returning, lasts beyond a short episode, or comes with urinary discomfort; a urine test may help identify infection or other findings.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, visible blood, confusion, or difficulty passing urine. These features can signal a more significant urinary problem. If you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or have reduced immunity, contact a clinician sooner when urinary changes are accompanied by symptoms.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a urine test, whether any medicine or supplement could alter urine appearance, and what changes should prompt follow-up. Tell the clinician how long episodes last, whether they occur after exercise or heat, and whether you have burning, urgency, fever, or flank pain.
