NRAS melanoma: what the mutation means

NRAS is involved in signals that tell cells when to grow. A change in this gene can support uncontrolled growth in melanoma cells, but the result does not by itself describe how far the cancer has spread or predict one person's outcome. Pathology, tumour thickness, ulceration, lymph-node findings, and imaging are considered together. A diagnosis of melanoma is the condition being managed; the NRAS result is one molecular feature within that diagnosis.

Ask your dermatology or oncology team whether the sample was adequate, whether other molecular tests are relevant, and which stage applies. Early melanoma is often managed with [Surgical Excision](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/excisional-surgery/). Do not change treatment because of an online gene description; the same mutation can be interpreted differently according to the full pathology and scan results.

Contact your cancer team promptly for a new or changing mole, a growing lump near a treated site, persistent swollen glands, unexplained bleeding, or new symptoms that concern you. New neurological symptoms such as severe headache, weakness, confusion, seizures, or changes in vision need urgent assessment; melanoma can spread to distant sites, including the brain, as described under [Brain Metastases](/conditions/brain-metastases/). Keep scheduled examinations and imaging because follow-up is tailored to stage and treatment.
