Nosebleed, headache and dizziness: what to know

Dryness, irritation, allergic rhinitis and a common cold can inflame the nasal lining and trigger bleeding. Sinusitis may cause facial pressure or headache alongside nasal symptoms. Dizziness can follow pain, stress, dehydration or standing up quickly. Hypertension does not explain every nosebleed, but very high blood pressure can occur with headache or other concerning symptoms and needs checking. A nosebleed itself is a symptom, not proof of a particular condition.

Sit upright and lean forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose firmly without checking repeatedly, and breathe through your mouth. Do not tilt your head back or pack the nose with tissues. After bleeding stops, avoid blowing or picking the nose for a while. Rest, take fluids if safe and note the headache pattern, dizziness, medicines and possible triggers. If you use blood-thinning medicine, seek advice rather than changing the dose yourself.

Call emergency services for a sudden severe headache, fainting, confusion, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, vision loss, chest pain or severe breathing difficulty. Get urgent help if bleeding is heavy, follows a head injury or will not stop with firm pressure. Arrange prompt medical review for repeated episodes, persistent dizziness or headache, or a known history of high blood pressure.
