What should you know about nose stud keloid?

A keloid can appear as a firm, smooth, raised lump that grows beyond the original stud opening. It may itch, feel tender, or become darker or lighter than nearby skin. A small bump limited to the piercing channel can instead be irritation, a hypertrophic scar, or a local infection. Acne and other skin lumps have different causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Do not squeeze the area or repeatedly remove and replace the jewellery while it is inflamed. A clinician will ask when the piercing was done, whether the lump is enlarging, and whether you or relatives have formed raised scars before.

Arrange a dermatology assessment, especially if the lump is expanding beyond the piercing site or has not settled. Keep the area clean with gentle care and avoid friction from headphones, masks, or sleeping on the piercing. Do not cut, burn, or apply home remedies to the growth. Treatment may include an intralesional steroid injection, pressure or silicone-based care, a laser approach for selected features, cryotherapy, or surgery followed by measures intended to reduce regrowth. The best plan depends on size, location, skin type, symptoms, and previous treatment.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, severe pain, or rapidly increasing swelling, because these features can suggest infection rather than a settled scar. Arrange review sooner if the lump bleeds, ulcerates, interferes with breathing, or changes quickly. A clinician can separate infection from scar tissue and choose the safest next step.
