Why does your nose keep getting stuffy?

Allergic rhinitis can flare after exposure to pollen, dust, or animal dander and often comes with sneezing or itchy, watery eyes. House dust mite allergy may be worse in bedrooms or during cleaning. Colds cause temporary swelling and mucus, while sinusitis may bring facial pressure, reduced smell, or thick discharge. Smoke, perfume, dusty air, and dry indoor air can keep the lining irritated. Ongoing nasal obstruction may also encourage mouth breathing and worsen snoring; sleep apnoea needs separate assessment if breathing pauses occur.

Keep a short diary of triggers, season, side affected, discharge, facial pain, and sleep symptoms. Reduce exposure to smoke and strong scents, ventilate rooms, and use saline spray or a suitable rinse. Wash bedding regularly if bedroom dust seems relevant. Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether allergy medication is appropriate; use decongestant sprays only as directed because prolonged use can worsen congestion.

Book a review when stuffiness persists between colds, repeatedly disrupts sleep, stays mainly on one side, or is accompanied by recurrent nosebleeds, severe pain, fever, foul discharge, or reduced vision. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling around the eye.
