Nose blocked on one side: what should you know?

The lining inside the nostrils naturally alternates between slightly fuller and less swollen sides, so blockage that shifts and settles may be harmless. A cold or allergic rhinitis can swell both sides, while a bent nasal partition, nasal polyp, or local irritation may keep one side affected. Sinusitis may add facial pressure, coloured discharge, reduced smell, or a cough. A blocked nose can also worsen mouth breathing and snoring at night.

Notice whether the blockage changes sides, how long it lasts, and whether dust, pollen, perfume, illness, or lying down makes it worse. Saline spray or a gentle saline rinse may loosen mucus; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse. Drink fluids and avoid smoke and other nasal irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable, especially if sneezing and itchy eyes accompany the congestion.

Arrange a medical assessment if one-sided blockage persists, repeatedly returns, causes nosebleeds, produces a foul-smelling discharge, or is associated with facial swelling, worsening pain, fever, or reduced vision. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, sudden facial weakness, or swelling around the eye.
