Norovirus headache

Norovirus commonly causes vomiting and diarrhoea. Those symptoms can reduce the body’s fluids and salts, while fever, poor sleep and eating less may add to head pain. A headache during a stomach illness does not by itself confirm norovirus; common cold, COVID-19, heat exhaustion, sinus problems and other causes can also produce headache.

Rest in a quiet place and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Continue sipping even if appetite is low. Keep a record of vomiting, diarrhoea, urine output and temperature to help judge whether the illness is improving. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow its label; ask a pharmacist if vomiting, pregnancy or another medicine makes the choice unclear.

Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, fainting, weakness, trouble speaking, a new rash, breathing difficulty, blood in vomit or stool, or severe dehydration signs such as very little urine. Arrange medical advice when the headache is persistent, worsening, unusual for you, or you cannot keep fluids down.

Ask whether the headache fits your other symptoms, which fluid or pain-relief options are appropriate, and whether you need testing for another infection or cause.
