Normal spontaneous vaginal delivery: what to know

Labour commonly involves contractions that help the cervix open, followed by pushing as the baby moves through the vagina. The placenta is delivered after the baby. The phrase does not promise a particular pain experience or rule out medicines, fetal monitoring, an episiotomy, or an assisted vaginal birth if circumstances change.

Your maternity team may recommend changing position, fluids, breathing techniques or pain relief. Oxytocin can be used when contractions need support; it is a hormone that helps the uterus contract.

Discuss your birth preferences, pain-relief options, mobility, monitoring and who can support you. Pack practical items, learn when to contact the maternity unit, and ask how your team handles changes in the plan. Induction of Labour may be discussed when labour needs to be started for a clinical reason; Caesarean Section is an alternative when vaginal birth is not suitable.

After birth, expect checks of bleeding, pain, urination and the baby’s feeding. Rest when possible, accept help, keep any wound area clean, and ask for a Lactation Consultation if feeding is difficult or uncomfortable.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fainting, fever, severe headache or visual changes, reduced baby movements, or fluid loss that concerns you. During labour, call if contractions become difficult to manage, you feel an urge to push, or you are unsure whether something is changing quickly.

Ask: How will you monitor me and my baby? Which pain-relief choices are available? When should I come to the unit? What might lead to assisted birth or Caesarean Section? How will you support feeding and recovery after birth?
