What should you know about a normal spirometry test?

Spirometry measures how much air you can move and how quickly you can blow it through a Spirometer. A clinician compares the result with expected values for your age, height, sex, and testing technique. A normal result can make significant persistent airflow obstruction less likely, especially when the test was performed well. Symptoms can still vary between visits, and some problems need testing during symptoms, after a medicine, or with a different lung assessment. A normal result therefore becomes one part of the clinical picture rather than a complete explanation.

Ask whether the blows met the quality requirements and whether medicine was withheld or used before testing. Keep a record of wheeze, cough, chest tightness, breathlessness, triggers, and night waking. If symptoms persist, the clinician may consider repeat Spirometry, other breathing tests, or assessment for conditions such as Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis, or Chronic Cough.
