What should you know about normal level of liver function test?

A liver function test usually combines markers related to liver-cell irritation, bile flow, and the liver’s ability to make proteins. The result is interpreted against the laboratory’s own reference range and alongside medicines, alcohol intake, symptoms, examination findings, and previous results. The pattern matters more than one isolated value.

Normal results are reassuring for the functions measured at that time. They do not rule out every liver condition, and some problems may be intermittent or require imaging or other tests. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Alcohol Use Disorder can each require clinical assessment beyond a single blood panel.

Ask the clinician who ordered the test why it was requested and whether any repeat testing or additional assessment is needed. Share a complete list of prescribed medicines, supplements, and non-prescription products, and mention alcohol use honestly because these details affect interpretation.

If the test was part of monitoring, keep the follow-up appointment even when the result is normal. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Keep copies of reports so changes can be compared over time.

Seek urgent care for yellowing of the skin or eyes with confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, fainting, or sudden severe illness. Arrange a prompt review for persistent itching, dark urine, pale stools, ongoing nausea, unexplained weight change, or pain under the right ribs. Symptoms deserve attention even when a recent test was normal.
