Normal delivery with placenta previa

Normal delivery is usually not advised when placenta previa covers or obstructs the cervix because labour can cause serious bleeding. The placenta may be close to or over the opening of the uterus, and its position can be reassessed as pregnancy progresses. The safest delivery route and timing depend on scan findings, bleeding, pregnancy stage, and the health of you and your baby. Follow the plan made by your obstetric team.

During labour, the cervix opens and the placenta can separate from the uterine wall. If the placenta lies over that opening, separation may cause rapid bleeding and can obstruct the baby’s passage. A scan helps locate the placenta and guide decisions. Some low-lying placentas are no longer close to the cervix later in pregnancy, while placenta covering the opening remains a serious delivery concern. Do not interpret a scan without the obstetric team’s advice.

Keep all appointments and ask when repeat imaging is needed. Make sure your maternity unit has your current contact details and know how to reach it quickly. Ask specifically about activity, sex, examinations, travel, and work because advice may differ after bleeding. Do not place anything in the vagina or attend a planned induction unless your obstetric team has confirmed it is appropriate. Contact your maternity unit immediately for any vaginal bleeding, even if it is painless or light, and follow its instructions about transport. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, dizziness, fainting, severe abdominal pain, contractions, or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment or try to assess the amount of bleeding at home. If you have placenta previa and bleeding starts, avoid eating or drinking until the maternity team advises you, in case urgent treatment is needed.
