What should you know about non productive cough?

A dry cough can follow acute bronchitis or irritation after a viral illness. Chronic sinusitis may drip mucus into the throat even when little is expelled. COPD, bronchiectasis, and pneumonia can affect breathing and may later produce phlegm. A cough’s sound alone cannot identify its cause, so duration, breathlessness, fever, chest pain, smoking history, and medicines matter.

Drink warm fluids, avoid smoke and dusty air, and use humidified air if helpful. Honey may soothe adults and children over one year, but do not give it to infants. A pharmacist can discuss a suitable cough product. Antibiotic treatment does not help every cough and should be used only when prescribed for an appropriate infection.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, coughing blood, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange review for a persistent cough, recurrent episodes, unexplained weight loss, fever, night sweats, or significant lung disease.
