What should you know about a non-contrast PET scan?

The commonly used FDG radiotracer collects in tissues using more glucose. A bright area can reflect cancer, infection, inflammation, or normal activity, so the image is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, and other scans.

Not using contrast may be suitable when contrast is not needed or may be unsuitable because of kidney problems, a previous reaction, or another clinical concern. A non-contrast scan still provides anatomical information, although some details may be less distinct than on a contrast-enhanced study.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about fasting, medicines, activity, and arrival time. Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent illness, and medicines that affect blood glucose.

After the tracer is given, rest quietly so muscles do not take up extra tracer. During the scan, remain still and tell the team if you feel unwell. Drinking fluids afterwards may help clear the tracer, if your care team permits it.

Contact the imaging service promptly if you develop a new reaction after the appointment, such as widespread rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or faintness. For questions about an unexpected result, ask the clinician who requested the scan to explain what it means and what test comes next.

Ask why a non-contrast study was chosen, whether the scan is being used for diagnosis or staging, what other findings will be compared, and whether you need another scan or a biopsy.
