No period but bleeding after intercourse

Bleeding after sex can come from friction, dryness, inflammation, infection, or a sensitive area on the cervix. A missed period may reflect hormonal contraception, breastfeeding, stress, a change in weight or exercise, or an underlying condition. Menopause, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and Premature Ovarian Insufficiency can affect the menstrual pattern, but none can be diagnosed from this symptom alone.

If pregnancy is possible, take a test and tell the clinician about the result. The combination of absent periods and unexpected bleeding deserves a review even when the bleeding is light or happens only once.

Arrange an appointment with a doctor or sexual health service. Record when the bleeding occurred, how much there was, whether it followed deep penetration, and whether you have pain, discharge, itching, or urinary symptoms. Avoid intercourse if it repeatedly triggers bleeding or causes pain until you have advice.

Do not use leftover treatments inside the vagina. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, check pregnancy, and discuss the reason your periods stopped. Turner Syndrome is one condition associated with menstrual problems, but personal history is needed to interpret that possibility.

Seek urgent care for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain. These signs can indicate significant blood loss, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy and need prompt assessment.

Ask what examination and tests are appropriate, whether dryness or infection could explain the bleeding, how to investigate absent periods, and whether you need cervical screening or follow-up after treatment.
