What should you know about NIR LED light therapy?

Short answer
NIR LED light therapy uses near-infrared light without ultraviolet radiation, but device settings and suitability matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Light type
- Near-infrared LED light, not ultraviolet light
- Key precautions
- Follow exposure instructions and protect the eyes as directed
How it works
Near-infrared light is delivered to the skin by LEDs, often from a panel. It is different from ultraviolet tanning light and from laser treatment. Depending on the device and goal, a clinician may use it as part of an acne plan, for redness, or to support recovery after selected procedures. It does not remove a deep cyst, treat an infection, or replace diagnosis of a changing lesion. Results and tolerability vary with wavelength, distance, exposure time, and the condition being treated.
Using it thoughtfully
Ask which wavelength, dose, eye protection, and schedule apply to your device. Follow the manufacturer or clinic instructions rather than extending sessions. Clean the skin as directed and remove products that may increase light sensitivity when advised. Protect your eyes whenever the device instructions require it. Tell the clinician about medicines, eye conditions, photosensitivity, pregnancy, and recent procedures. Stop and report significant heat, blistering, swelling, or persistent irritation.
When to seek care
Get medical advice if acne is painful, scarring, rapidly worsening, or accompanied by fever, or if a spot changes in colour, shape, or behaviour. Seek prompt help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, eye pain, or a burn after treatment. A dermatologist can decide whether LED therapy fits the diagnosis and whether another treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
What is the treatment target, and how will progress be judged? Which device settings and eye protection are appropriate for me? Could any of my medicines make light exposure unsuitable? What should I do if my skin becomes hot or irritated?

Questions people ask
Is NIR LED therapy the same as laser treatment?
No. LED panels emit non-laser light across a broader pattern, while lasers deliver a concentrated beam with different uses and risks.
Can NIR LED therapy cure acne on its own?
It may be considered within an acne plan, but it does not address every acne cause or replace assessment of severe or scarring acne.
