Night-time restless legs: what to know

Short answer
Night-time restless legs cause an urge to move with uncomfortable sensations that worsen during rest and improve temporarily with movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Typical trigger
- Rest or lying still
- Temporary relief
- Moving or stretching the legs
What the pattern means
People may describe crawling, pulling, throbbing, itching, or deep discomfort, usually in both legs. Symptoms often appear when sitting or lying down and can delay sleep or wake you repeatedly. Restless Legs Syndrome presents with this pattern, but similar sensations can also occur with peripheral neuropathy or other problems affecting nerves.
Iron deficiency anaemia and chronic kidney disease can be associated with restless legs. Pregnancy, some medicines, caffeine, and sleep loss may also influence symptoms. A clinician can review your history and decide whether blood tests or a medicine review would help.
Ways to ease evening symptoms
Keep a regular sleep schedule, take a gentle walk or stretch before bed, and use warmth or massage if it helps. Limit caffeine later in the day and note whether alcohol, medicines, or prolonged sitting make symptoms worse. Do not start iron tablets without medical advice; iron supplementation is useful only when deficiency is confirmed or strongly suspected.
Keep a short diary of timing, sensations, sleep disruption, and relief from movement. Discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician, especially if they are affecting concentration, mood, or daily functioning. See Restless Legs and Restless Legs Syndrome for more detail.
When to seek care
Book an appointment when symptoms are frequent, progressively troublesome, or regularly interrupt sleep. Seek urgent help for a suddenly swollen, hot, red, or very painful leg, or for leg symptoms with chest pain or breathlessness, because that pattern needs immediate assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could iron deficiency, kidney disease, nerve irritation, or a medicine be contributing? Do I need blood tests? Which activity, caffeine, or sleep changes are worth trying? If iron is low, how should it be replaced and monitored?

Questions people ask
Why are restless legs worse at night?
Symptoms commonly become noticeable during evening rest, when there is less movement to distract from uncomfortable sensations and the urge to move.
Should I take iron for restless legs?
Only after a clinician assesses whether iron deficiency is present or likely, because unnecessary iron can be harmful.
