Night guard for snoring: does it help?

Short answer
A night guard may reduce snoring for some people when it gently changes jaw position, but the right device depends on the cause and it cannot replace assessment for sleep apnoea.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Some devices move the lower jaw forward
- Not the same
- A tooth-grinding guard is not automatically an anti-snoring device
- Warning sign
- Breathing pauses or gasping during sleep
What a night guard does
Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the nose or throat vibrate as air moves during sleep. A dentist-fitted mandibular advancement device holds the lower jaw or tongue slightly forward, which may widen the airway in selected adults. A standard tooth-grinding guard protects teeth but is not designed to treat snoring.
Blocked nasal breathing from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can contribute to noisy breathing, while Obesity can increase airway narrowing. Loud snoring with pauses, gasping, morning headaches or marked daytime sleepiness raises concern for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and needs medical evaluation.
Using one safely
Arrange a dental and medical assessment before buying a device, particularly if you have jaw pain, loose teeth, dentures, significant dental work or symptoms of interrupted breathing. A custom fit can reduce pressure on teeth and the jaw. Follow cleaning and wear instructions, and stop if you develop persistent pain, tooth movement, bite changes or jaw locking.
Side sleeping, treating nasal congestion, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime and maintaining a regular sleep routine may also reduce snoring. A Weight Management Programme may be discussed when body weight contributes to airway narrowing.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice if someone notices breathing pauses, choking or gasping during sleep, or if you have severe daytime sleepiness that affects driving or work. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness while awake, fainting or sudden confusion. Do not use a guard to postpone assessment of these signs.
Questions to ask
Ask whether your pattern suggests simple snoring or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, whether a sleep test is needed, which device is suitable for your teeth and jaw, and how its effect will be checked.

Questions people ask
Can I buy a night guard online for snoring?
An unassessed device may fit poorly or worsen jaw and dental symptoms. A dentist can check whether an advancement device is appropriate.
Will a night guard cure snoring?
It may reduce snoring in selected people, but results depend on the underlying cause and it does not treat every airway problem.
