What hormone is in Nexplanon?

Etonogestrel is a synthetic form of the hormone family called progestogens. Released steadily from the rod, it acts mainly by stopping an egg being released. It also changes cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. Nexplanon contains no oestrogen.

Because hormonal effects vary between people, periods may become irregular, longer, shorter, lighter, or absent. Acne, headaches, breast tenderness, or mood changes may also occur. These effects are different from an allergic reaction or a local infection, which need assessment.

Tell your prescriber about migraine, liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, breast cancer history, or medicines that affect hormone breakdown. Keep a list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and herbal remedies.

If bleeding is disruptive, record its pattern and discuss options with a clinician. Do not add hormonal products or stop another medicine based only on changes after insertion. Etonogestrel does not prevent sexually transmitted infections, so use condoms when infection protection is needed.

Arrange prompt medical review for severe abdominal pain, a positive pregnancy test, very heavy or persistent bleeding, or a rod that cannot be felt. Urgent help is appropriate for trouble breathing, chest pain, sudden weakness, or facial swelling.

Redness, warmth, pus, worsening pain, or numbness in the arm can indicate a local problem. These symptoms should be assessed rather than attributed automatically to the hormone.
