Nexplanon and a stopped period

Nexplanon releases etonogestrel, which changes ovulation signals and thins the lining of the womb. Some people therefore have very light bleeding or no period. Others have spotting or irregular bleeding. A pattern can change after months of use, so a stopped period is not a reliable way to judge whether the implant is present or effective.

Pregnancy remains possible if the implant is outside its planned use period, has been inserted incorrectly, cannot be located, or interacts with a medicine. Stress, weight change, thyroid conditions, breastfeeding, and other health issues can also affect periods.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test according to its instructions and repeat it or contact a clinician if uncertainty remains. Check the implant date and tell the clinic if you cannot feel the rod or take medicines that may interact with contraception. Keep a record of bleeding and symptoms. If you prefer predictable monthly bleeding, discuss options including the hormonal coil, rather than stopping the implant without contraceptive cover.

Arrange medical advice for a new absent period with pregnancy concerns, persistent lower abdominal pain, unusual discharge, fever, or pain during sex. Seek urgent help for severe one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, or heavy bleeding when pregnancy may be possible. These symptoms need prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be serious.

Ask whether you need a pregnancy test or examination, whether your medicines affect the implant, what bleeding changes are expected for you, and which method suits your preferred cycle pattern.
