Etonogestrel is a synthetic form of the hormone family called progestogens. It mainly prevents ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to pass, and changes the lining of the womb. The rod delivers the hormone without needing a daily tablet.

Because the hormone affects the menstrual cycle, bleeding may become irregular, lighter, longer, more frequent, or absent. These changes can be inconvenient but are not automatically harmful. They do not reliably indicate how much contraceptive protection is present.

Before insertion, share your medical history and every medicine or herbal product you use. Some treatments can lower hormone levels and may require additional contraception or a different method. Track bleeding only if it helps you describe a pattern; you do not need to predict your cycle for the implant to work.
