What should you know about NexGen total knee replacement?

A total knee replacement replaces the worn surfaces of the thigh bone, shin bone, and sometimes the underside of the kneecap. NexGen refers to a family of implant components rather than one identical operation for every person. The surgeon selects sizes, alignment, fixation, and component combinations according to bone shape, ligament balance, activity needs, and the condition of the knee.

Components may use metal alloys and a durable plastic bearing. Some implants are fixed with bone cement, while others rely on bone growing onto a prepared surface. Computer navigation may assist alignment in selected operations, but it does not replace surgical judgement. Knee osteoarthritis is one reason a replacement may be considered when pain and limited function persist despite non-operative care.

Before surgery, review medicines, dental problems, skin irritation, medical conditions, home stairs, and help available after discharge. Afterward, the rehabilitation plan usually includes walking practice, swelling control, knee bending, straightening, and progressive strengthening. Use walking aids as advised and keep the wound instructions available. Recovery is individual; regular exercises and safe pacing matter more than forcing a painful movement.

Contact the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a calf that becomes newly swollen and tender. Seek urgent help for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or a cold, pale, numb foot. A fall, sudden loss of movement, or a new grinding or instability sensation should also be reported promptly.
