Newborn stye: what to know

A stye, also called a hordeolum, is a small inflamed lump near the edge of an eyelid. It may look red and feel tender, and the eyelid can become puffy. A stye generally affects one focused area, whereas swelling spreading around the eye or heavy discharge can point to another problem.

Eye Discharge or Red Eye may occur with several conditions, so do not assume every red or sticky newborn eye is a stye. A newborn’s eye should be examined when the appearance is unclear or symptoms are increasing.

Wash your hands before touching the baby’s face. Hold a clean, comfortably warm damp cloth against the closed eyelid for a short, gentle period, then use a fresh part of the cloth to wipe outward if discharge is present. Do not squeeze or pierce the lump, share towels, or put breast milk, cosmetics, or leftover eye drops into the eye.

Keep the baby’s nails short enough to reduce scratching and avoid contact lenses or eye patches. Because newborn eye problems can worsen quickly, contact a clinician before using any medicine.

Seek urgent medical help for swelling that spreads around the eye, fever, a cloudy-looking eye, marked light sensitivity, difficulty opening the eye, unusual sleepiness, or a baby who seems generally unwell. Prompt assessment is also needed for significant pus-like discharge, worsening redness, repeated vomiting, or any concern that the baby cannot see or track normally. A stye that is not settling should be reviewed rather than squeezed.

Show when the lump began and whether it is changing. Ask whether the eye needs an examination, how to clean it, whether prescribed treatment is appropriate, and which swelling or discharge changes should prompt an urgent review.
