What should you know about newborn scalp red?

Newborn skin can flush after crying, feeding, bathing, or being wrapped warmly. A hat, headband, rough fabric, frequent rubbing, or a fragranced product can also irritate the scalp. Look at the pattern: mild redness under an area of pressure may settle after the pressure is removed, while redness with greasy scale can fit seborrheic dermatitis. Thick, sharply defined scale, broken hairs, or tender patches deserve a clinician’s opinion because scalp psoriasis or scalp ringworm may need specific care. Redness alone does not identify one diagnosis.

Keep the scalp cool and dry without chilling the baby. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser only when needed, then pat rather than rub. Avoid picking flakes, tight hats, essential oils, and adult dandruff products unless a clinician recommends them. Note when the redness appears, whether it follows a product or pressure point, and whether there is scale, odor, hair loss, or tenderness. Do not use medicated shampoo therapy on a newborn without advice.
