What should you know about newborn pimples on face?

Newborn skin can develop tiny red or pale bumps on the cheeks, forehead, chin, or around the nose. Oil glands and changing hormones can contribute, and heat, saliva, or rubbing may make the area more noticeable. Folliculitis can look like pimple-like bumps around hairs, while irritation around the mouth can resemble perioral dermatitis. A clinician may consider acne, rosacea, or another rash when the pattern is unusual.

Look at the whole picture: are the bumps uniform or mixed with scales, crust, blisters, or pus? Is the baby comfortable, feeding normally, and alert? The location alone does not identify the cause.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed, then pat dry. Wipe milk and saliva away with a clean damp cloth. Do not squeeze the bumps or scrub the skin. Avoid acne products, steroid creams, essential oils, fragranced lotions, and adult cosmetics unless a clinician specifically recommends them. Keep hats and blankets from overheating the face.
