What should you know about new treatments for bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis widens and damages parts of the airways, making mucus harder to clear and allowing repeated infections in some people. Treatment may include airway-clearance techniques, inhaled medicines for selected breathing problems, antibiotics for a flare or particular infection pattern, pulmonary rehabilitation, and care for an underlying cause. A chest X-ray can show broad lung changes, while spirometry measures how air moves in and out. These tests are interpreted alongside cough, sputum, breathlessness, previous infections and examination findings.

Drink enough fluid for your health needs unless a clinician has advised restriction, and avoid smoking or second-hand smoke. Keep a record of changes in cough, phlegm colour or amount, breathlessness, fever and exercise tolerance. Use antibiotics only when prescribed, and complete the agreed course. Attend follow-up testing so treatment can be adjusted for infections, lung function, medicine effects and daily activity.

Contact your clinician promptly if your cough suddenly worsens, phlegm becomes much more abundant or changes colour, fever develops, or breathlessness increases.
