What should you know about a new MRI scanner?

Short answer

A new MRI scanner may use updated magnets, coils or software to produce detailed images, shorten parts of an examination or improve comfort, but safety screening remains essential.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Technology
MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not ionising radiation.
Possible updates
Newer systems may improve speed, sound levels, opening size or image processing.
Safety
Implants, devices and contrast considerations must be checked before scanning.

What may be different

MRI scanners use a magnetic field and radio waves rather than ionising radiation. Newer equipment may have wider openings, quieter sequences, faster image capture, improved coils, or software that helps the radiology team produce clearer pictures. The exact benefit depends on the body area, the examination protocol and whether contrast is needed.

A scanner upgrade does not make every scan suitable for every patient. Metal implants, devices, fragments, kidney function, pregnancy and previous contrast reactions still affect planning. The radiographer may adapt the sequence or choose another test when MRI is not appropriate.

How to prepare

Complete the safety questionnaire carefully and mention every implant or device, including items placed during earlier operations. Remove jewellery, watches, cards, hearing aids and other metal objects as instructed. Follow any centre-specific guidance about eating, drinking or contrast.

During the examination you lie still while the scanner makes repeated loud sounds. Ear protection and an alert button are usually available. Tell the team before the appointment if you are anxious in enclosed spaces or need help transferring onto the table. Ask whether a support person, calming plan or alternative imaging test is suitable.

When to get help

Tell the technologist immediately if you feel pain, burning, severe anxiety, dizziness or unusual warmth during the scan. After contrast, seek prompt advice for a spreading rash, swelling, wheezing or faintness. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty or collapse.

Most post-scan questions can be handled by the imaging centre, including when to expect the report and whether you may resume normal activities. A new symptom being investigated by MRI should be reported to the clinician who requested the examination rather than waiting for the scan report.

Questions for your doctor

What body area will be scanned, and why is this scanner preferred? Will contrast be required? Are any of my implants or medicines relevant? How long should I expect to lie still? When and how will the images be reviewed?

Questions people ask

Is a new MRI scanner safe for everyone?

Not automatically. The team must check implants, devices, metal fragments, kidney function and other individual factors before the scan.

Will a newer scanner always make the scan shorter?

No. Timing depends on the body area, image sequences, movement and whether contrast or additional images are needed.
