What should you know about a new GE MRI scanner?

MRI does not use ionising radiation. The scanner creates a magnetic field, sends radio waves through the body, and receives signals that a computer turns into images. A newer system may have updated software, coils, table design, or image-processing tools, but the examination still depends on the body part, the requested sequences, and the radiology team’s protocol.

You may hear loud knocking or buzzing and need to remain still inside the scanner. Some examinations use contrast medicine through a vein. Ask whether contrast is planned, how long you need to remain still, and whether headphones or communication equipment will be available. If enclosed spaces are difficult, mention it before the appointment so the team can discuss practical support.

Tell staff immediately if you feel unwell during the examination, develop breathing difficulty, or notice a sudden problem with an implanted device. After contrast, seek prompt medical advice for facial swelling, widespread rash, severe breathing trouble, or faintness. Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about delayed symptoms and result collection.
