What should you know about new cherry angioma?

Cherry angiomas are common vascular skin growths. They may be smooth or slightly raised and can occur on the trunk, arms, legs, or other areas. A spot may bleed if scratched, shaved, or rubbed, but bleeding does not confirm its identity. A clinician may use a close examination or dermoscopy when the appearance is unclear.

Because other red or changing lesions can look similar, avoid diagnosing a new spot from a photograph alone. Tell the clinician if it is changing in colour, shape, size, or surface, or if it repeatedly crusts or bleeds.

If the diagnosis is clear and the spot causes no trouble, monitoring may be reasonable. If it catches on clothing, bleeds repeatedly, or bothers you cosmetically, removal can be discussed. Pulsed dye laser treatment targets blood vessels with light, while electrosurgery uses controlled electrical heat; the choice depends on the lesion and your skin.

Do not cut, burn, or tie off the spot at home. After removal, keep the area clean, avoid picking the crust, and use the recommended wound care and sun protection.

Arrange a prompt skin assessment for a spot that changes quickly, has an irregular appearance, forms a persistent sore, or bleeds without clear injury. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure or for signs of infection such as spreading redness, pus, or fever.

Ask whether the appearance is typical, whether monitoring or removal is appropriate, which method fits the location, what mark or crust to expect, and whether tissue needs laboratory examination.
