What should you know about nevoid melanoma?

Short answer

Nevoid melanoma is a form of melanoma that can look like an ordinary mole, making professional examination and pathology essential.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What nevoid melanoma means

This tumour may have a mole-like appearance rather than the more obvious irregular pattern people associate with melanoma. The surface can seem quiet while deeper examination reveals melanoma cells. A dermatologist considers the lesion's history, visual features and any change in size, shape, colour or texture. A tissue sample examined by a pathologist is what confirms the diagnosis and describes features that affect treatment planning.

The diagnosis belongs within the wider melanoma group. It does not mean that every changing mole is melanoma; many skin marks have harmless explanations. It does mean that a suspicious lesion should not be judged from a photograph or appearance alone.

What to do after it is suspected or diagnosed

Arrange a prompt dermatology assessment if a clinician has raised concern. If a biopsy has already been taken, keep the pathology report and ask which findings determine the next step. Treatment commonly starts with removing the melanoma with an appropriate margin of surrounding skin. Depending on the findings, the team may discuss further surgery, a sentinel lymph node biopsy, imaging or medicines such as immunotherapy.

Do not pick, shave or repeatedly traumatise the area while waiting. Photographing the site for your own records can help you notice change, but it cannot replace examination. A melanoma team can explain whether surgical excision, skin cancer surgery or tumour removal surgery fits the lesion and its stage.

When to seek care

Book a dermatology review for a new or changing mole, especially one that develops asymmetry, uneven colour, a growing lump, bleeding, crusting or persistent itching. Seek urgent medical advice for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever or wound changes after a biopsy. New neurological symptoms such as a severe persistent headache, weakness, confusion or a seizure need emergency assessment rather than waiting for a routine skin appointment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What did the pathology show? Was the whole lesion removed? Do I need a wider excision or sentinel lymph node biopsy? Has staging been completed, and which follow-up visits are needed? Which changes at the scar or elsewhere should prompt an earlier review?

Questions people ask

Can nevoid melanoma look like a normal mole?

Yes. Its mole-like appearance is why a suspicious or changing lesion needs professional assessment and, when indicated, pathology.

What happens after a diagnosis?

The care team reviews the pathology, checks whether further removal or staging is needed, and discusses follow-up or additional treatment.
