What should you know about neuro fatigue?

Short answer
Fatigue is persistent physical or mental exhaustion that does not always improve with sleep and can have many possible causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What fatigue can mean
Fatigue may feel like low energy, heavy limbs, poor concentration, slower thinking, or an effort to complete ordinary tasks. It is different from normal sleepiness, although the two can occur together. Short-term fatigue may follow an infection, disrupted sleep, intense activity, emotional strain, or a change in routine.
Ongoing fatigue can accompany conditions such as anaemia, dehydration, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, COVID-19, burnout, alcohol use disorder, or chronic fatigue syndrome. These conditions have different patterns and treatments. Fatigue alone cannot identify which one is present, and a clinician may need to ask about sleep, mood, diet, bleeding, medicines, alcohol, pain, and other symptoms.
Steps that may help
Keep a simple record of energy levels, sleep, meals, activity, symptoms, and anything that makes fatigue better or worse. Aim for a regular sleep and waking time, gentle activity within your limits, balanced meals, and enough fluids. Break demanding tasks into smaller parts and schedule rests before you become exhausted.
Avoid using alcohol or stimulant products as a substitute for sleep, since they can disrupt recovery or conceal worsening symptoms. Arrange a medical appointment when fatigue persists, limits work or daily activities, or comes with weight change, fever, breathlessness, bleeding, low mood, or disturbed sleep. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for fatigue with severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness, or thoughts of harming yourself. Immediate assessment is also appropriate if you are unusually drowsy and difficult to wake, or if severe weakness began suddenly.
Make a routine appointment if fatigue is new and unexplained, keeps returning, or is affecting concentration, mobility, personal care, or employment. A clinician can look for an underlying illness and decide whether examination or tests are appropriate based on your history.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could my sleep, medicines, diet, mood, or alcohol use be contributing? Which symptoms would point toward anaemia, an infection, or another condition? Do I need an examination or blood tests? What level of activity is sensible while I feel fatigued, and when should I return if it does not improve?

Questions people ask
Is fatigue the same as sleepiness?
No. Fatigue is reduced physical or mental energy; sleepiness is a tendency to fall asleep, though they can happen together.
Can an infection cause fatigue?
Yes. Fatigue may occur during or after an infection, but persistent or disabling symptoms deserve medical assessment.
