Nerve headache: what to know

The phrase is not a precise diagnosis. People may use it for brief stabbing pain, pain travelling from the neck or scalp, or a headache with tingling or sensitivity. Sinus symptoms, a viral illness, dehydration, heat exposure, anxiety and muscle tension can also cause head pain. Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Sinusitis may produce facial pressure, while a Common Cold or COVID-19 may bring headache with other symptoms. The pattern, duration, triggers and associated features help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Rest in a quiet, comfortable place, drink fluids if you may be dehydrated, and note when pain starts, where it travels and what comes with it. Avoid driving if dizziness or visual symptoms are present. Use only pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label or a clinician’s advice. Arrange review when headaches recur, change pattern, follow an injury, or do not settle.

Seek emergency help for a sudden, severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting or new vision loss. Get prompt medical advice for headache with a high fever, a spreading rash, severe eye pain, or after a significant head injury. In hot conditions, confusion, collapse or worsening weakness can signal Heat Exhaustion or a more serious emergency.
