What should you know about a neck strain lump?

A lump in the neck may feel tender after a muscle injury, irritation, or a nearby infection. Lymph nodes can enlarge while the immune system responds, and the thyroid can also produce a visible or palpable swelling. A neck lump is a common presentation of some head and neck cancers, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer, but the lump itself does not identify its cause.

A clinician will consider its exact position, texture, movement, tenderness, duration, and any associated symptoms. Examination may include the mouth and throat, lymph-node areas, and thyroid. Further assessment can involve imaging or a tissue sample when the findings call for it. Cancer of unknown primary may be considered when abnormal tissue is found but its starting site is not clear.

Note when you first noticed the lump, whether it changes in size, and whether movement or touch affects it. Avoid repeatedly pressing it, which can make the area sore. Arrange a medical appointment if it does not settle, returns, or feels firm and fixed. Take a list of medicines and recent infections to the visit.

The clinician may recommend observation for a short period when the pattern fits strain or infection, or may arrange tests to clarify the tissue involved. If a thyroid cause is suspected, discuss whether thyroid imaging or thyroid removal surgery could become relevant; surgery is only one possible treatment and depends on the findings.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, a new hoarse voice, severe neck pain after an injury, or weakness, confusion, or fainting. Contact a clinician promptly for a lump that is hard, fixed, painless, or accompanied by unexplained weight change, night sweats, persistent fever, or blood in saliva.
