What should you know about neck skin tags?

A skin tag, also called an acrochordon, is commonly a small, flesh-coloured or darker piece of tissue that projects from the skin. It may have a narrow stalk or a broader base and can become irritated where the neck rubs against clothing, hair, or jewellery. Several may appear in the same area.

A photo or description cannot reliably distinguish every neck growth. A lesion that is firm, bleeding, ulcerated, rapidly changing, very dark, or unlike your other tags may need a closer examination before treatment. Do not assume a new growth is a skin tag simply because it is on the neck.

If removal is wanted because of snagging, irritation, or appearance, a clinician can select an approach based on the size, attachment, and diagnosis. Options may include freezing with cryotherapy, controlled electrical treatment, or a procedure designed specifically for skin tag removal.

Avoid cutting, tying off, or applying untested home chemicals to a neck growth. These methods can cause bleeding, infection, burns, or a scar and may delay diagnosis. Keep the area clean after professional treatment and follow the dressing advice you receive.

Arrange an assessment if the growth changes quickly, repeatedly bleeds, becomes painful, develops a sore, or has an irregular colour or border. Seek prompt care for bleeding that does not stop with steady pressure, spreading redness, pus, fever, or marked swelling after removal.

Ask whether the lesion has the typical features of a skin tag, which removal method suits its attachment, whether tissue needs laboratory assessment, and how to care for the site afterward.
