What should you know about neck lymph node lymphoma?

Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system and may cause one or more enlarged neck nodes. Nodes can be painless and may feel firm or rubbery, although these features are not diagnostic. Some people also develop fever, unexplained weight loss, itching, or night sweats. Night sweats can have many causes, so they do not confirm lymphoma. The main types and their behaviour differ, which is why a clinician usually needs tissue from a node or mass rather than relying on touch or a scan alone.

Arrange assessment for a persistent or growing node, especially when there is no recent infection to explain it. Evaluation may include a physical examination, blood tests, imaging, and a biopsy. A PET-CT scan can help show active areas and support staging after the diagnosis is established. Treatment depends on lymphoma type, stage, symptoms, and overall health. Options may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, cellular therapy, or an autologous stem cell transplant in selected situations. CAR T-cell therapy may be considered for some people whose lymphoma meets specific clinical criteria.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow, sudden facial or neck swelling, confusion, or severe weakness. Contact the treating team promptly for rapid node growth, persistent high fever, drenching night sweats, or worsening pain. If lymphoma has already been diagnosed, new symptoms during treatment should be reported because infection and treatment effects may need rapid attention.
