What should you know about neck lump locations?

Lumps under the chin or along the side of the neck may involve lymph nodes that respond to nearby infections or other conditions. A swelling low in the front of the neck can involve the thyroid. Lumps near the jaw, ear, or upper neck can also come from salivary glands, skin, or muscle. A clinician considers whether the lump is tender, movable, firm, growing, or associated with changes in the mouth, throat, voice, or swallowing. A neck lump may be linked with head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer whose starting site is not immediately clear, but a lump does not establish any of these diagnoses.

Record when you first noticed the lump, where it sits, whether it changes, and any recent sore throat, dental problem, skin infection, fever, or weight change. Arrange a medical examination if it persists, enlarges, returns, or has no clear short-term explanation. Assessment may include feeling the neck, examining the mouth and throat, blood tests, imaging, or a sample when indicated. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage the area, because this can irritate it and make changes harder to judge.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe weakness. Arrange prompt review for a persistent or enlarging lump, a hard or fixed lump, unexplained hoarseness, ongoing swallowing difficulty, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. These features need assessment because they can reflect conditions requiring timely treatment; they do not by themselves prove cancer.

Ask: Which structures are near this location? Does the lump feel like a lymph node, thyroid swelling, or another type of mass? What examination or scan is appropriate? If a sample is advised, what will it clarify? When should I return if it changes?
