What should you know about neck lump getting bigger?

A neck lump that is getting bigger should be assessed promptly because growth changes the need for examination and targeted testing. Enlargement can occur with infection or inflammation, but it can also reflect a thyroid nodule, an abnormal lymph node or another tissue mass. Growth does not prove cancer, and waiting for pain to appear is not a reliable way to judge urgency.

Clinicians look at the speed and pattern of enlargement, whether the lump is tender or fixed, and where it sits in relation to the thyroid, jaw and lymph-node chains. They also ask about sore throat, dental infection, skin changes, hoarseness, swallowing, breathing and general symptoms. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer and cancer of unknown primary can be part of a differential diagnosis, alongside many non-cancerous explanations.

A lump may seem larger because surrounding inflammation changes, so measurement by touch is imprecise. An examination and, when needed, imaging or sampling give more useful information than repeated home checking.

Contact a doctor or clinic promptly and describe when the lump began, how its size has changed, and whether it is mobile or attached to deeper tissue. Mention recent infections, dental treatment, medicines, smoking or alcohol exposure, previous cancer treatment and any new voice or swallowing symptoms. Take a photograph only if it helps show visible change; it cannot replace examination.

Avoid squeezing or attempting to drain the lump. Possible next steps include a neck examination, ultrasound or other imaging, blood tests, and a needle sample when clinically appropriate. Thyroid removal surgery is considered only for selected thyroid conditions after assessment.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, choking, rapidly increasing neck or tongue swelling, or inability to swallow saliva. Arrange prompt review for persistent hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, unexplained weight change, fever, drenching night sweats, severe pain, or a lump that is enlarging quickly. The reason for urgent review is the symptom pattern, not an assumption about the diagnosis.

Ask how the lump is being measured, which structures may be involved, and whether an ultrasound or other test is appropriate. Ask whether you need a cell sample, how to recognise further growth, when results will be available, and which service to contact if breathing, swallowing or voice symptoms change.
