What should you know about a neck biopsy needle?

A clinician cleans the skin and may use local anaesthetic before guiding a fine needle or a larger core needle into the area of concern. Ultrasound or another imaging method can help position the needle. The sample is sent to a laboratory, where specialists examine cells or tissue. A needle biopsy can help distinguish infection, inflammation, benign change, and cancer, but a result may sometimes be unclear or require another sample.

The laboratory may use Immunohistochemistry to look for proteins that help classify the cells. Further testing, such as Genomic Tumour Profiling, is considered only when the diagnosis and treatment question make it useful.

Tell the team about blood thinners, bleeding problems, allergies, pregnancy, and previous neck surgery. Ask whether to pause any medicine; do not change it without instructions. Arrange the recommended aftercare and keep the dressing clean. Mild tenderness or bruising can occur. Seek urgent help for rapidly expanding neck swelling, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, voice change, or fainting. These symptoms can need immediate treatment after a neck procedure.
