A picosecond laser delivers energy in extremely brief pulses. The pulse can fragment pigment into smaller particles for the body to clear, while the surrounding tissue receives less time under sustained heat than with some other laser approaches. Nd:YAG describes the laser wavelength; pico describes the pulse duration, so the terms refer to different features of the device.

Clinicians may consider this approach for selected sun spots, tattoos, or uneven pigmentation after examining the skin.
