What should you know about natural gait analysis?

Short answer

Natural gait analysis observes walking or running mechanics to identify movement patterns and guide comfortable, practical support.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the assessment means

A clinician may watch your posture, stride, foot contact, balance, joint alignment and the way your body absorbs load. The assessment can be done while you walk, jog or perform a task that brings on discomfort. Some clinics use video, pressure mapping or sensors to add detail; these tools describe movement but do not diagnose every cause of pain by themselves.

The aim is to understand your individual pattern rather than force your movement to match an ideal. Findings may help a clinician choose exercises, footwear advice or a referral for further assessment.

How to prepare and use the findings

Wear the shoes you commonly use and bring any activity notes that show when symptoms appear. Tell the clinician about previous injuries, work demands and the surfaces or distances that change your symptoms. A [3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/) system or [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) may be useful when more detailed movement or foot-loading information is needed.

Recommendations should connect to your goals. [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) may be discussed when foot mechanics and symptoms suggest they could help, but an insert is not automatically needed after an assessment.

When to seek clinical care

Arrange an assessment if a change in walking persists, you are repeatedly tripping, or pain limits ordinary activity. Seek urgent care for sudden inability to walk, new severe weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin. These features need prompt medical assessment rather than a routine gait review.

Questions for your clinician

Which movement finding is most relevant to my symptoms? Could my footwear, strength or balance be contributing? Which exercise should I start first, and how will we know whether the plan is helping? Do I need assessment of a joint, nerve or spine as well?

Questions people ask

Does gait analysis hurt?

The observation itself is generally gentle, although you may be asked to repeat a movement that normally brings on symptoms.

Does every gait finding need treatment?

No. A finding matters when it fits your symptoms, goals and examination; a clinician may recommend monitoring or simple exercise instead.
