Natural birth after a C-section: what to know

Your clinician will look at the reason for the earlier caesarean, the uterine incision, any other surgery, the placenta's position and the baby's presentation. A vaginal birth after caesarean is planned in a unit able to monitor you and the baby and perform an urgent caesarean if needed. A previous birth experience, your preferences and the recovery implications of each route also belong in the conversation.

Ask for your previous operation report if the details are unclear, then review it at a prenatal visit. Make a birth plan that covers when to attend hospital, fetal monitoring, pain relief, movement and what happens if labour slows or concerns appear. Call your maternity service promptly for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid loss, regular contractions, faintness or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are sudden or intense. Once in labour, tell staff about new pain, dizziness, breathlessness or a change in contractions so they can assess you without delay.
