What should you know about nasal wheezing?

A blocked or inflamed nose may make air vibrate as it passes through a narrow space. Allergic rhinitis can cause swelling, congestion and postnasal drainage. A sound that comes mainly when breathing out, especially with chest tightness or cough, may instead be airway wheezing. Asthma, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis and COPD are possible airway causes; the noise alone cannot identify one condition.

Notice whether the sound is from one nostril or the chest, whether it began with a cold or allergy exposure, and whether you feel short of breath. A clinician may listen to your chest and examine your nose and throat.

Move away from smoke, strong fragrances and known allergens. Drink fluids if mucus is thick, and use a gentle saline nasal rinse only with safe, prepared water and clean equipment. Do not share inhalers or start antibiotics without medical advice. If an inhaler or other treatment has already been prescribed, follow its instructions; a nebuliser may be considered by a clinician when inhaled medicine is needed.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, faintness, confusion, swelling of the lips or tongue, or trouble speaking in full sentences. Sudden wheezing after a food, medicine or insect sting can signal anaphylaxis and needs immediate action. Arrange prompt assessment for new or worsening wheeze, chest pain, fever with breathing difficulty, or symptoms that keep returning.
