Naphcon-A for conjunctivitis: what to know

Naphcon-A is an eye-drop product containing an antihistamine and a decongestant. The antihistamine targets allergy-related itching; the decongestant narrows surface blood vessels to reduce visible redness for a short time. It will not clear an infection or explain why an eye is painful. Conjunctivitis can involve Red Eye or Eye Discharge, and Light Sensitivity changes the urgency of assessment.

Using redness-relieving drops repeatedly can make redness return or become harder to manage. A product that helped before may be unsuitable if the cause, age, contact-lens use, or medical history is different.

Follow the product label or a clinician’s instructions. Wash your hands, avoid touching the bottle tip to the eye or skin, and do not share the bottle. Remove contact lenses if the label advises it, and ask a pharmacist when they can be worn again. Stop and seek advice if the drops cause significant pain, worsening vision, or a strong reaction. Do not substitute antibiotic drops without an assessment; Antibiotic Treatment is appropriate only for selected infections.

Arrange a GP Consultation if discharge persists, symptoms keep returning, or allergy treatment is not helping. Seek urgent eye assessment for severe pain, reduced vision, marked Light Sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, or a red eye in a contact-lens wearer. These features can signal a problem needing treatment beyond an over-the-counter drop.
