What should you know about nail wrinkles?

Short answer
Nail wrinkles usually describe ridges or grooves in the nail plate, often related to nail ageing, dryness, repeated irritation, or past injury; a sudden change deserves assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Nail wrinkles usually describe ridges or grooves in the nail plate, often related to nail ageing, dryness, repeated irritation, or past injury; a sudden change deserves assessment. Longitudinal ridges run from the cuticle toward the tip and can become more visible over time. Horizontal grooves cross the nail and may mark a temporary interruption in nail growth. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
What the lines may mean
A nail is made from keratin and grows from a specialised area beneath the cuticle. Changes in that growth area can leave a visible line as the nail moves forward. Frequent hand washing, solvents, picking, manicures, or biting can make the surface look rougher and can irritate the surrounding skin. A knock or pressure to the nail may leave a groove that gradually grows out.
Lines in several nails, marked thinning, splitting, spoon-shaped nails, or changes in colour can have causes beyond surface dryness, including skin conditions or broader health problems. A dark streak that is new, widening, irregular, or extending onto the skin beside the nail should be examined promptly.
What you can do
Keep nails at a comfortable short length and moisturise the nails and cuticles after washing. Wear gloves for prolonged contact with water, cleaning products, or chemicals. Avoid scraping the ridges, aggressive buffing, cutting the cuticles, and repeated artificial-nail removal, because these can weaken the nail plate and hide useful changes.
Take a clear photograph when you first notice a change and compare it as the nail grows. A clinician can inspect the nail, surrounding skin, and other nails, then decide whether testing is needed. Cosmetic procedures such as Botox or dermal fillers do not correct the nail-growth source of ridges; they are used for different concerns, including selected facial lines and volume changes.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if a groove appears suddenly, affects many nails, keeps returning, or comes with pain, swelling, redness, tenderness, bleeding, nail lifting, or major colour change. Seek prompt assessment for a new dark band, especially when it changes shape or reaches the nearby skin.
An appointment is also sensible when nail changes occur with a new rash, joint symptoms, marked tiredness, or other unexplained changes. Bring a list of medicines and recent illnesses, and mention injuries, salon treatments, and chemical exposure; these details help connect the nail finding with its timing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Is this a ridge, groove, colour change, or a problem with the skin around the nail? Could a recent injury, manicure, medicine, or skin condition explain the timing? Do I need an examination of other nails or any tests? What should I photograph or monitor while the nail grows?

Questions people ask
Are vertical ridges in nails always a medical problem?
No. Fine vertical ridges can become more noticeable with nail ageing or dryness, but a new, pronounced, painful, or widespread change should be assessed.
Can nail wrinkles be smoothed at home?
Moisturiser may improve a dry, rough appearance. Avoid aggressive buffing or scraping, which can thin the nail and cause further damage.
Can facial wrinkle treatments remove nail wrinkles?
No. Botox and dermal fillers address selected facial movement lines or volume concerns, not the nail-growth process that creates ridges or grooves.
