What should you know about nail matrix psoriasis?

The nail matrix forms the hard nail plate. Inflammation in this area can leave small depressions called pits, transverse grooves, roughness, or altered thickness as the nail grows. The nail bed and skin around the nail can also be affected, causing lifting, scaling, or tenderness. Nail changes may occur with plaques elsewhere, but they can also be the most noticeable sign. The pattern is assessed alongside the skin, scalp, and joint history because several nail problems can resemble one another.

Keep nails trimmed, file sharp edges gently, and wear gloves for wet work or cleaning. Avoid picking beneath a lifted nail, biting the nails, or pushing back the cuticles, since repeated injury can sustain inflammation. A dermatologist may prescribe a medicine applied to the nail or nearby skin; persistent or extensive disease may call for treatment that also controls psoriasis elsewhere. Improvement follows the pace of nail growth, so treatment is usually reviewed over time rather than judged after a few days.

Book an assessment when pits, grooves, lifting, or colour change persist, spread, or affect several nails. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, swelling, pus, warmth, or redness around the nail, as these can signal infection or another problem. Mention morning stiffness, swollen fingers or toes, or painful joints because nail psoriasis can occur alongside inflammatory joint disease.
