Crumbling nails and psoriasis

Psoriasis may involve the nail matrix, where the nail is formed, or the nail bed beneath the plate. Changes can include tiny pits, ridges, thickening, separation, or crumbling edges. Keep nails short with gentle filing, wear gloves for wet or dirty tasks, and avoid picking beneath the plate. Pause biting, aggressive cuticle work, and cosmetic enhancements while the nail is fragile. Moisturise surrounding skin after washing, especially if it is dry or peeling. A clinician can distinguish nail psoriasis from infection and discuss treatment suited to the affected nail and any skin or joint symptoms.

Book an assessment if crumbling persists, several nails change, the nail lifts, or daily tasks become uncomfortable. Seek earlier advice for warmth, increasing redness, pus, or marked pain, which may suggest a separate infection. Mention finger or toe stiffness, swelling, or morning joint discomfort because psoriasis can be associated with joint symptoms.
