What should you know about myocardial viability PET scan?

A myocardial viability PET scan helps show which areas of heart muscle remain living and may respond to improved blood flow. It is a decision-support test, not a stand-alone prediction of how your heart will recover or which treatment you should choose.

Heart muscle can be weakened yet still have recoverable function when its blood supply is reduced. The tracer highlights how the muscle uses energy, while CT helps locate the tissue. Clinicians compare the images with symptoms, heart function, coronary anatomy and previous treatment.

A result showing reduced activity does not automatically explain every symptom. The care team may discuss whether the pattern supports medication changes, a procedure, further testing or continued monitoring.

Use the centre's instructions about fasting, glucose control, caffeine, exercise and medicines. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies and any trouble staying still. Bring your medicine list and prior heart imaging if requested.

A radiotracer is given through a vein, followed by a waiting period and image acquisition. Ask whether someone should accompany you and how the preparation applies to your usual meals or diabetes medicines.

Report worsening pain, warmth or swelling around the injection site to the imaging service. Get emergency help for new chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion or sudden weakness; those symptoms need urgent assessment rather than waiting for scan results.

Ask what decision the viability study will inform, how the images will be combined with your heart-function tests, what preparation applies to your diabetes medicines, and when you will discuss the report.
