What should you know about muscle cramps while sleeping?

Short answer
Muscle cramps while sleeping are sudden involuntary spasms that can ease with gentle stretching, movement, and attention to hydration.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What night-time cramps can mean
A calf, foot, or thigh muscle may tighten without warning and feel hard or intensely sore. Triggers include strenuous activity, prolonged sitting, dehydration, pregnancy, some medicines, and changes affecting nerves, circulation, or mineral balance. Repeated cramps can occur with conditions such as Dehydration, Hypothyroidism, or Chronic Kidney Disease; a cramp alone does not identify its cause.
What to do during and between cramps
During a cramp, stop the activity and slowly stretch the affected muscle. For a calf cramp, straighten the leg and draw the toes toward your face, or stand and put gentle weight through the leg if safe. Light massage or warmth may help afterward. Drink fluids regularly, avoid sudden increases in training, and gently move the legs before bed. Do not start mineral supplements without discussing them with a clinician.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if cramps are frequent, severe, worsening, disturb sleep repeatedly, or come with weakness, numbness, swelling, or changes in walking. Urgent help is appropriate for a painful swollen leg with breathlessness or chest pain, or for sudden marked weakness. A clinician can review medicines, examine circulation and nerves, and choose tests when needed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether a medicine, fluid loss, circulation problem, or thyroid issue could be contributing. Bring a note of the muscle affected, timing, duration, recent exercise, and any swelling or weakness.
