Muscle aches from statins: what to know

Statin-related symptoms often involve aching, tenderness, cramps, or weakness in large muscle groups, but timing and distribution vary. Symptoms may begin after starting treatment or changing a dose, although an infection, new exercise, dehydration, thyroid problems, or another medicine can look similar. Hypothyroidism and Fibromyalgia are examples of other conditions that may cause aching. Influenza, COVID-19, Dengue Fever, Malaria, or Brucellosis may also cause body aches when other illness features are present. A symptom does not prove the statin is responsible.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist and describe when the aches began, which muscles are affected, whether weakness is present, and every medicine or supplement you take. Do not stop or restart a statin, alter its dose, or substitute another treatment without advice, because cholesterol treatment decisions depend on your health history. The clinician may review interactions, examine you, and decide whether a monitored change or tests are appropriate. Keep taking notes about activity, fever, urine colour, and symptom progression.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening muscle pain, pronounced weakness, difficulty walking, fainting, confusion, or dark brown urine. Get prompt advice if aches are accompanied by fever, vomiting, or reduced urine. Contact your prescriber soon for new or persistent symptoms even if they are mild, particularly after a medicine or dose change. Bring the medicine containers or an accurate list to the assessment.
