Mumps and cough: what should you know?

Mumps commonly affects the salivary glands, causing swelling near the cheeks or jaw, tenderness and fever. Cough may occur alongside a separate respiratory infection, or throat irritation may make the illness feel connected. A cough alone does not establish mumps. Ask about recent contacts, vaccination history and whether swelling, headache or difficulty chewing is present.

Other explanations include a common cold, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux or acute bronchitis. In children, bronchiolitis can cause cough and breathing difficulty. Asthma may cause wheeze or chest tightness, while a cough lasting beyond the expected recovery period needs review as chronic cough.

Drink fluids, rest and avoid smoke or strong fragrances. Honey may soothe cough in adults and children over one year, but never give honey to an infant. Do not share utensils or drinks if mumps is possible, and call a clinic before visiting when facial swelling and fever are present. Keep a note of cough triggers, breathing changes and the day symptoms began.

Get prompt advice for swelling by the jaw, persistent fever, severe headache, worsening cough or contact with confirmed mumps. Seek urgent help for blue lips, severe breathlessness, confusion, inability to swallow, chest pain or a child who is unusually difficult to wake. A clinician can examine the throat, chest and glands and decide whether further assessment is needed.
